World Music Guitar in Park Slope
Discover the richness of world music through the guitar.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, my lessons are designed to help you achieve meaningful results with confidence. I specialize in world music guitar, drawing on rhythms and styles from Latin America, the Mediterranean, Africa, Eastern Europe, and beyond. From the very first class, we focus on right-hand technique—because that’s where groove, tone, and musical expression begin. You’ll also develop essential skills in accompaniment and improvisation, so you can both support others and create freely on your own. With an engaging, hands-on approach and personalized guidance, you’ll not only build solid skills, you’ll also find your own voice on the instrument.

Meet Your Guitar Instructor
Hi, I’m Francois Wiss.
I picked up the guitar as a kid over 40 years ago, and it’s been my passion ever since. My journey with the instrument has taken me across the world—learning not just in academic settings but through real, immersive experiences: traveling, meeting musicians from different cultures, and absorbing their styles firsthand. From the south of France to Spain with the gypsies, from the Caribbean to Central and South America, from North Africa to the Balkans, and of course, in New York City, I’ve always traveled as a troubadour—learning, playing, and sharing music wherever I went.
As a teacher, I have extensive experience, having taught in France in primary and middle schools—with over 2,500 students to date. In the U.S., I’ve taught countless private lessons and led workshops at institutions such as Barnard College and the Alliance Française. My approach blends strong technical foundations with a broad, global perspective on music, giving students a unique and well-rounded learning experience—while supporting their joy of playing.
As a performer, I’ve played in some of the most iconic venues in New York City, including B.B. King’s, Café Wha?, Groove, City Winery, Subrosa, Bonafide, The Rainbow Room, and even The Blue Note, where I regularly appear.
I’m also a proud Park Slope resident and a father to a child attending PS 321. As both a musician and a parent, I understand the importance of fostering creativity and expression in young minds. Teaching is something I’m truly passionate about, and I aim to share not just the mechanics of guitar playing, but also the joy, depth, and cultural richness that music brings.
Whether you’re looking for lessons for yourself or your child, I’d love to share my knowledge and experience while nurturing your love for music and guitar in a supportive, stimulating, and fun environment.
I am located in the heart of Park Slope and offer all my classes in English, French, or Spanish.

02. Faster Progress
I’ll help you build the right skills in a smooth, natural progression—so you keep growing with confidence and enjoy the process along the way. The classes always stay challenging, with just the right amount of stretch and variety to keep you moving forward steadily. Students are expected to do a manageable amount of practice and light homework between each class to stay on track and get the most out of every lesson.

03. Proven Method
From day one, I prioritize right-hand technique and rhythm—often the most challenging part for students—so you build confidence early and start making real music faster. We focus on essential techniques like arpeggios, rasgueados (strumming), and picado, laying the foundation for fluid, expressive playing across a wide range of styles. Lessons stay engaging and musically rewarding, with a repertoire adapted to your personal taste—so you’re not just learning technique, you’re actually enjoying the music you make.
